Eating Chisinau: placinte, mamaliga, zeama and wine that explains everything

Moldovan food is dangerously straightforward: pastry, cheese, cornmeal, sour cream, meat, cherries and wine. Within a day you start suspecting the global food pyramid was unnecessarily complicated.

CHISINAU

Start with placinte filled with cheese, potato, cabbage, pumpkin or cherries. Follow with zeama, a tangy chicken soup with homemade noodles, and mamaliga with brined cheese and sour cream.

Move on to sarmale, grilled meat and Moldovan wine. The pancake-cherry-cream dessert Cusma lui Guguta looks excessive. This is one of the rare cases where excess is fully justified.

An empty Moldovan table is usually a temporary administrative error.

Day 1: start with placinta

Eat it hot and do not waste time asking for the single most authentic filling. Everyone has a different correct answer.

Have zeama for lunch. A good bowl explains Moldovan comfort food faster than a lecture.

Day 2: market and cornmeal diplomacy

Browse local cheese, vegetables, fruit and pickles, then order mamaliga with cheese, sour cream and meat. Very simple food, oddly effective at silencing a table.

Morning

Breakfast can be pastry, cheese and coffee. Chisinau does not demand a seven-course morning ritual.

Evening

Order several dishes for the table: sarmale, grilled meat, vegetables and mamaliga. Sharing is the easiest way to taste more without pretending you came for salad.

Day 3: wine and Cusma lui Guguta

Wine is part of the meal here, not merely a souvenir. Plan tastings without a car; humanity already has enough bad ideas.

Finish with the famous pancake, cherry and cream dessert. By that point its unusual name will no longer be the strangest thing about the portion size.

The useful list without food snobbery

Placinte, zeama, mamaliga, brined cheese, sarmale, grilled meat, seasonal vegetables, Cusma lui Guguta and local wine are more than enough to build a trip around.

What to skip

Not everything labelled “traditional” deserves your dinner:

  • Tourist restaurants with encyclopaedia-sized menus
  • Mystery ultra-cheap homemade alcohol
  • Trying everything in one evening
  • International fast food when fresh placinte are nearby

Food that does not need a presentation

Chisinau feeds you well without ceremony. Product and home-style logic matter more than oversized designer plates.

Mix cafés, markets and ordinary restaurants, leaving room for wine and dessert.

Placinta rarely solves life’s problems, but it improves your negotiating position.
